How to Create Your Online Course Without the Overwhelm

Creating online courses are an incredible way to create a side hustle or even a full-time income. They can also be overwhelming and intimidating when you start getting into the actual course creation. There are so many details to juggle and keep track of, it can seem like it is almost impossible to keep your eye on the prize without getting stressed out.



When you know that you are going to be outlining, writing, scripting, shooting, and editing hours of content, it can be daunting to get started. With that, if it takes weeks or months to complete a course, it can be challenging to stay on track, thinking back to why you are creating the course in the first place.

1) Set Your Goals


What is your end goal with creating courses?


What do you ultimately want to accomplish?


It can be easy to get stressed and lose focus when you are working with dozens of moving pieces in a course. So much so that we can forget why we started creating courses in the first place.


Many of us get into creating online courses because we are passionate about something, but we also want to make an income from that passion. Boosting your current income or creating a whole new income source is reliant on one thing ––– providing value to others. Something that people value enough to pay you for.


Goals vary and come in all shapes and sizes. Whether your goal is making more money, growing your audience, or enriching the lives of others, always look back to your primary goal, your ‘why’ when you are creating your course.


2) Define Your Audience and the Value You’re Providing


You probably already have an idea of who your audience is and what you and your audience are passionate about. Ask yourself these questions though:


- What is your audience trying to accomplish?


- What are the challenges they are facing in how to achieve this?


- How are you uniquely qualified to help them?


- What is your unique, valuable approach for getting them there?


If you can answer these questions, you are already on your way to creating a great course built on what your audience needs and wants.


3) Treat Your Course Like a Project


There are lots of components that go into creating a great online course from writing and editing to audio, video, creating marketing campaigns, and adding your own teaching flare to your courses. With so many boxes to check off, it’s better to treat your course like a project or a marathon than a sprint.


Creating a course is a huge task that takes time and effort. As such, it should be broken up into smaller digestible bits. Instead of treating your course like a big checkbox that takes a long time to get to, break it up into phrases that you can check off as you complete them. Plan out the phases of your course before you even get started with writing or filming. It would be best if you started with a planning phase to map out everything you will need to create, sell, and market your course.


This will give you a touchpoint to keep on track with your progress and is an excellent trick for building momentum that will get you to the finish line.


4) Outline Your Course


Now that you have a plan, it’s time to create a course outline. That starts with defining what your students will walk away with at the end of your course – what’s the significant promise your course will deliver. Identify each milestone required for students to achieve the promise. Then outline each deliverable you will create for the course, which may include videos, PPT, downloadable worksheets, workbooks, audio files. Structure the content in modules, lessons, and teaching points. This will give you a template for each essential component that makes up your course.


5) Stick to the Plan. Stick to the Outline


One of the main reasons instructors get overwhelmed and anxious when creating courses is that they feel like they are buried under a pile of work. A mountain of tasks and content they can’t see the top of.


Now that you have outlined the entirety of your course, it’s time to stick to it. Your outline and phases have given you the work calendar that you need to get the job done. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed and lost in work, look back to the project plan to see what you need to be doing next.


6) Focus on Your Strengths


Your mission as an instructor and creator is providing value for your audience that is unique to you, your skills, your teaching style, etc. You don’t have to be the master of everything in your niche to create something of value. Actually, I’ve found that it’s quite common that the person who has the expertise struggles with creating the best content. Why? Because they’re so familiar and close to the content, it’s hard to be objective to know what to include and exclude in the course. Also, it can be challenging for creatives to organize and structure what’s in their head into a tangible product like an online course. Focus on the unique strengths you have in your field and leverage those in creating your content.


7) Delegate Your Weaknesses


Creating online courses is a massive undertaking, and often we can’t do all the work ourselves. Another reason that instructors get overwhelmed or even give up is that they lack all of the necessary skills to put their course out there.
